The Smethwick Engine was one of James Watt’s early steam engines (1779) used to pump water up the canal locks and is now preserved at Thinktank.. The site was excavated in 1985 and roofed over for protection and is not normally accessible.

A tour of the excavation is offered by volunteers from the Friends of Galton Valley.

Entree is FREE. Sorry there are no toilet facilities.

The excavation site is on the junction of Rolfe Street and Bridge Street in Smethwick B66 2AY
