Jordan Thornton
Jordan Thornton is an undergraduate history student at the University of Birmingham who began working on the James Watt 2019 project during the summer of 2016 as part of the University of Birmingham's Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme. Jordan's research centralises upon an investigation of James Watt's changing visual legacy over the past two hundred years which has involved studying a diverse variety of visual material relating to Watt; ranging from conventional portraits of Watt and his advancements to steam technology, to collectible items, commercial advertisements and other James Watt memorabilia such as cigarette cards and postcards. By examining a variety of source material spanning over the course of two centuries, Jordan's research has highlighted the important role played by visual storytelling in producing and sustaining a series of posthumous narratives for James Watt.
